According to the article 266 of the Order's Code, "superiors of Order's institutions have to establish in their circonscription charitable and social assistance actions in which members of different classes could permanently exercise the mission for which they engaged to fulfil. Through the HSSOMS, the helvetic Association give an opportunity to many volunteers to participate in the spirit of the Order to its actions. The idea was presented to the helvetic Association by one of its member who was impressed by the pilgrinage to Lourdes conducted by the Hospital Service of the Order in Austria (MHDA). ![]() The goal of the Hospitaller Service of the Sovereign Order of Malta in Switzerland is to offer medical and social help to sicks and indigents. Regulation of 1977, revised in 1991, precise that activities have to be guided to assistance to sick, disabled, pilgrins, old and disaster's victims. From that time, HSSOMS will works in Switzerland with several humanitarian organisations, and also everywhere it could help in case of natural disaster, according to the Order's strategy. Any practising Christian who wish to work voluntarily in the spirit of the knightly tradition of the Order of Malta, should be able to join this group either as an activ member, receiving a paramedical formation at the beginning, and wearing an working uniform, or as a sympathizing member, ready to pay an annual subscription, as well as give a morally and logistical help. HSSOMS is divided in 11 sections :
